대구대학교 GRADUATE SCHOOL

The DU Graduate School of Social Welfare curriculum is designed to develop expertise in both professional knowledge and practice and prepares students to become a social work professional, educator, or researcher. The DU Graduate School of Social Welfare launched a Master’s degree program in 1974 and a PhD degree program in 1977 respectively. As of October 2018, 389 students received a Master’s degree, and 108 students received a PhD degree. And about 90 graduates are currently working as a professor nationwide, which proves that the DU Graduate School of Social Welfare provides extensive and advanced professional knowledge for our students to enhance their academic and research performance. The school offers two majors; social welfare policy and social work practice. These majors help students to recognize a wider range of social needs and to contribute to the development of social welfare.

Academic Objectives

1. Prepare professional social workers who can develop effective strategies to rapidly adapt to the social changes by acquiring professional knowledge and skills and applying them to practice.

2. Prepare social welfare professionals who can tackle social problems competently by using principles and theories in social welfare appropriately.

3. Prepare social welfare leaders and research specialists who could take an active role in coping with future social changes.

The theory section deals with the existing mainstream theories on the development, retreat, and reorganization of the welfare state, and examines the developmental welfare state discussion on the development of the Korean welfare state. In the real part, the characteristics and current status of the welfare state development in Europe, the United States, East Asia, and Korea are compared and dealt with.

11338	Social Welfare Policy Seminar	This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the institutionalization process and current status of social service policies in Korea based on historical and conceptual understanding of social services. Based on this, we study theories focusing on supply organization and policy enforcement in social service policy.
11977	Seminar on Social Welfare Issues	By researching and analyzing the current situation and problems of social welfare in Korea by field, and discussing related countermeasures, students can comprehensively synthesize the social welfare knowledge acquired throughout the curriculum. This course provides an overview and critical analysis of the history and conceptual foundations of disability studies as an academic discipline. Historical and contemporary definitions, classifications, theories, applied models, and personal descriptions of disability experiences are presented, discussed, synthesized and critiqued.
17937	Qualitative Research Methods in Social Welfare	In this course, students familiarize themselves with the concept of qualitative research and the difference between it and quantitative research, and develop the ability to analyze social welfare phenomena in a naturalistic and qualitative way. For this purpose, students learn basic qualitative research skills including data collection methods through observation and interview, data organization, data analysis, and narrative methods. Major qualitative research methods include grounded theory, cultural descriptive journals, life history research, and phenomenological research.
18053	Advanced Research Methods 1	Basic statistical techniques and research methods for analyzing social welfare research data are studied in order to enhance the scientificity of the theory and practice of social welfare studies. Chi-square, t-test, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, logistic regression analysis, etc. are included.
18056	Advanced Research Methods 2	This course understands advanced statistical analysis and research methods that have been actively used in social welfare survey data analysis. It includes multivariate analysis such as factor analysis, logistic and discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, canonical correlation analysis, multivariate ANOVA, structural equation model, multi-layered model, and non-parametric statistical analysis.
18298	A Research on Aging Policy in Ageing Society	This course aims to develop research capabilities on social policies to prepare for an aging society. To this end, as the main contents of this course, we first examine theories and concepts of an aging society and aging phenomenon. Next, based on this new understanding, each of the income security policy, labor market policy, and care policy in response to aging and the reorganization status will be reviewed. In this course, we look at Korean policy cases together with foreign policy changes.
18389	Delivering Social Welfare	In this course, students learn the theory that determines the subject of finance, regulation, and production and delivery in providing social welfare services. Through this, we understand the characteristics and limitations of the central and local governments, public and private for-profit, and private non-profit sectors in providing social welfare services. It analyzes how the characteristics and limitations of each subject appear by learning about the delivery of social welfare services in various countries and the specific policy changes that occur here. It aims to derive a desirable social welfare service delivery system model that can be applied to Korea.
18758	Gerontological Social Work Practice	This course deals with clinical issues for the practice of welfare for the elderly based on a basic understanding of aging. In this lecture, Ph.D. students take an in-depth look at topics related to health in old age and mental health from a social welfare perspective. Furthermore, it seeks the direction and program of desirable welfare practice for the elderly in response to an aging society.

To this end, it focuses on understanding practical theories, applying them to cases, and comparative analysis. During the course of the course, students will discuss the pros and cons of theory.
18979	Welfare Governance & Social Welfare Policy Research	This course aims to learn about welfare governance and social welfare systems in which the government and the private sector cooperate with each other in the era of localization. In addition, this course studies socioeconomic, static contextual relationships, human needs, and policy issues related to poverty.

19401	Understanding Poverty	This course aims to enable students to conduct poverty research on their own by examining various aspects of the poverty problem and corresponding poverty policies. For this purpose, this course is mainly composed of two parts. The first part focuses on the poverty problem and the corresponding poverty policy. The second half deals with various evaluation methods and related issues to measure the performance of poverty policies.
