The Department of Special Education opened the first masters course in 1973. It was the first Special Education masters program in Korea. The department was also the first to open a doctoral program in Korea and it trains many professionals in the field of special education. There are currently seven majors offered in the masters and doctoral programs: Education of the Visually Impaired, Education of the Language and Hearing Impaired, Education of the Mentally Retarded, Education of students with Multiple Disabilities, Education of students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Education of Children with Learning Disabilities, and Leadership in Special Education. The programs have produced 70 graduates.
